Talking about coyotes got me thinking about something.Being a young buck back in the late sixties l remember hearing my father talk about a bounty on wolfs. The guys he hunted deer with where seeing a drop in seeing deer and attributing that to a large wolf population. We always hunted up around the Apsely area. That year all the hunting gangs in that area shot quite a few wolfs.Right or wrong that helped the deer to rebound back.Hunted that spot all my life. Not sure what the deer population is like there now.My dad passed away 10 years ago and I just can't bring myself to go there without him.Anyway was there a bounty on wolfs in the late sixties ?

Yes there was in Ontario up here in 70s by townships and deer/bear and moose/bear licenses combined . Bear before me were vermin from my chats with Ralph Bice WAY way before my time Ralph told me about a deer cull in Algonguin Park . Was in 30 s and documented true . My personal knowledge starts in mid 70s but Ralph Bice was my friend and a historian . Yeah we argued too especially about wolves and bears too . ol Ralph's opinion was " only good one was a dead one " . Funny thing is any truth to reinincarnation Ralph said " I wanna come back as a wolf " . He put an axe through one swimming

I thought I was the only one who remembered Ralph Bice. Now THAT was one amazing man when it came to his knowledge of bush craft and trapping. We spent HOURS with him at the Trappers Convention in North Bay about 40 years ago and he was still teaching us new stuff the whole time he was talking. That man was a legend and well deserved many times over.

Yeah I miss ol Ralph but not his handshake and I shook his hand often and everytime we met . Still see his big knuckles and cringe at the thoughts of that grip . I can still see him coming round that corner by Fetterleys garage on two wheels in his dune buggy . He also is the only trapper to get the Governor General's Award . Told them too as I recall that he wouldn't accept unless it said he was a trapper although he was more renowned for being a guide . He wrote a couple of books and a regular column for the local newspaper .

Yes, I also remember as a 15 year old on our first farm in Hampton in the Durham region in the late 60's early 70's there was a $50.00 bounty and lots of huge jacks as well.. Lot of sheep farmers and cattle farmers like on our farm lost spring stock and new borns to the wolves. Back then lots of wild pheasant in our farm fields.
