I was able to get out this morning to a local forest in search of the elusive rabbit. It was a fantastic morning, even seeing a deer on the drive to the bush. Thirty minutes in to my hike I spotted a big bunny. He was standing on his back legs about 80 yards away. I had entered the bush with a 20 Guage that has a new adjustable choke. I did exactly what I had been taught not to...I didn't pattern this new barrel and choke prior to the hunt. I had it set to FULL and crept closer and closer keeping my eye on the rabbit. I got to within 30 yards and took my shot. The rabbit bolted. I swung and reloaded trying to keep ahead, tracking him as he dodged between the trees. I shot again but he got behind some thick bush and trees and kept going. I followed his tracks to no avail. He was gone - with out a scratch. Disappointed, I unloaded and fiddled with the new choke. I realized I could still give it one full turn adjustment. I had assumed previously that I was on FULL, but believe now it was wide open.
So...lesson learned. PATTERN YOUR GUN.
I continued my hunt but could not find any more rabbits. I did spook a deer on my way out (of course I did, the seasons closed!) of the forest. I packed my vehicle and drove towards home. On the way I saw a group of approximately 20 turkeys. I know one thing. I'll have my gun patterned perfectly for them.
Great morning, just wishing I had a rabbit dinner.

Nice story, sorry about the results. I sure miss walking the trails with my shotgun. Spent my youth carrying my Cooey 20g single shot through the bush. A lot of bunnies met their end during those days.

Thanks guys, glad to know I'm not the only one who has made that mistake. I know I should have known better. This site is not only great for information but also acts as cheap therapy after a botched hunt.
