Just a heads up to those who may not be aware.
Although I no longer hunt, I feel that I should pass this info along in the event that some members have not been informed of this. Perhaps it's old news to some of you.
Last evening I saw a video on CBC 60 minutes about the Remington model 700. It appears from the information given that they can be extremely dangerous in so that when the rifle is loaded, some have a tendency to accidently discharge when the safely is released WITHOUT YOU TOUCHING THE TRIGGER.
I was totally shocked when I watched this program in which it was stated that Remington has received thousands of complaints about accidental discharge that date back to the 1970's, yet Remington is in total denial of any such defects in the trigger mechanism nor takes absolutely no responsibility for the accidents and deaths that have occurred with that model rifle.
Some innocent children have been killed due to this discharge problem, yet only recently and since 60 minutes aired that program has Remington finally issued a recall on the many millions of model 700's out there.
If you haven't heard about this problem and happen to own this rifle, I would highly recommend you watch the video. It will certainly scare the crap out of you and hopefully prevent you from being an unsuspecting owner or perhaps worse. Not all models 700's are affected, but certainly enough out there with a defective trigger mechanism that warrants a recall.

I did the same with a couple Remington rifles of mine. Shipped them off and the Remington reps here in Quebec put new triggers in them. They covered all costs,
Im not saying that there has never been any issues with the 700 but it seems like the majority of issues are caused by modification by someone who is unqualified and poor maintenance. That said i think im do for a stop at my local gunsmith for a complete once over on my remington!

The 60 minute report is classic media crap....what Trump would call " fake news". Check out the Remington website listed in one of the earlier posts as well as a the Remington open letter recently posted in the National Firearms Assoc newsletter. The media doesn't present us with facts....it decides how it wants us to think and then creates a narrative to move us in that direction.

not defending Remington, but innocent children have died due to the safety defect?? I think I would blame that on the idiots that had their loaded rifles point at children when they took the safeties off.

Not all deaths may be from point blank... some maybe a mile away and it wasn't "Pointed" at anyone. Now I'm sure most where dumb asses pointing guns at people, but either way, the fact that this happens is a major concern.

So your solution is to ignore the media reports, ignore the actual evidence of this happening to people (some of whom posted on this thread confirming this problem), ignore the fact that Remington issued a recall on these rifles. And instead of taking all these facts into account, you would rather take the word of a corporation that has a vast financial interest in trying to convince people that there is no problem?

Lazinator: x2. Very similar to GM Canada telling their customers in 2010 that burning a litre of oil in 3200 km is "well" within specs. (EPA might have a different perspective!)

Hey folks, I didn't mean to start a war out there. I just wanted to bring the potential problem to everyone owning that rifle to be aware and perhaps take some action in case your rifle may be one affected and before it may cause a serious problem that may haunt you over a lifetime. I always owned Remington guns, loved the product and never had an issue with them. I would continue to buy them if I still hunted. I agree with the fact that one cannot always trust what we see/read on the TV nor especially the internet, but that info should be enough to make a person think a little. Yes there are two sides to every story and IMO it's always best to hear both sides of it before jumping to conclusions. Because that 60 Minutes program is usually quite informative, take it for what it is.........information to inform us. It's up to you to follow up if you wish. IMO, I doubt that the program would have put out false information based on their past history and certainly Remington is going to defend their product, but in today's society I think we all have to investigate a little to determine the real truth from the fake news, making sure that you have sorted out all of the alternative facts before you become an innocent victim. Be careful out there!

Hey David, This was a very good post and very informative. You did not start a war you simply contributed to the forum and thanks for the contribution. People will always interpret what they read in their own way and format their own opinions which is fine and everyone has a right to do so. However it is the way that people express their opinions that really matters. These opinions should be expressed in a manner that does not come across as a personal attack just because they don't agree but in an informative way expresssing the reason for they have a different opinion. At this point people can agree to disagree but they don't have to throw stones at each other.

I agree... very good post.
In manufacturing there will always be defects. Cars are one of the biggest industries in the world and defects has kill many. Companies who will admit and take extreme measure to correct their mistakes are good companies. Recent news has a recall on a Volka company who may mistakenly filled bottles at 81% alcohol while the label says 40%. These stuff happen everyday may it be with guns, cars, meds, to the simplest food we eat.
