Hunting QEWII (WMU 56)

Odd scenario. Got a camping trip scheduled for Sept 8th,9th,10th and i was thinking about doing some very light hunting (provided it's legal).

The reg's document seems to bounce around a lot for info on provincial parks and before actually taking a firearm in there I intend to call the MNR office in Minden.

But as best as i can tell. Rabbit/Squirrel is not open, Morning Dove is (Migratory regs), Fox is, but it says to review provincial park rules and it says it's generally not allowed in provincial parks. But QEWII is one of the allowed parks as per page 28 of the regulations.

Basically i want to bring my Henry AR7 .22 into the park and am willing to hunt anything that is legal. (Taking rookies out). It is highly unlikely we will actually fire that gun, but in case i come across a warden.

I essentially want to teach some new folks the basics of hunting all while keeping it all legal. I'll have a gun sock for it although it will mostly be packed up in the stock the entire trip.

Any help clarifying the rules would be greatly helpful.

Although dove is open can't use a 22 on them. Shotgun only and non toxic also

Would love too see the look on the wardens face when you tell him I'm hunting skunk. Good on you for teaching some newbies the art of hunting but really you don't need to bring the firearm along. It has little to do with hunting. Now if your intention is to teach them how too shoot that's a different discussion. Its hard for me to believe you are bringing a gun to hunt skunk and I'm sure the ministry will look at you with the same skepticism and draw more attention than you'll want.

It's just one of those outdoor things to do.

A bit of gun/hunter safety, nature watching, and if we actually see something in season maybe take a shot at it. I would only bring 2 clips of ammo (16 rounds) as weight matters when hiking/portaging in.


Next year i'll plan it around rabbit season but this year's trip is already booked.

you lost me at 2 clips of ammo. Lets be real how many foxes/skunks you plan on running into over those 3 days. Admit it you want to go do some target shooting but just looking for an excuse to cover it.

My pack weighs 57 lbs and there's no way in hell im adding 5 lbs to it for 16 shots and the whole 30 seconds it would take to shoot them into a target. I also have land that I shoot in every other week or so (not mine so no the newbies can't come with as I don't make the rules).

16 is a convenient number if you're familiar with that rifle.

Don't think for a second I wouldn't take a fox hide. Skunk not so much...

Take the .22, take a box or two (100 rnds) of ammo which may weigh all of .5lbs and do some plinking...
Just check, sometimes parks will be designated with a no target practice rule. county forests down this way allow hunting but not target practice.

Hence he wants to go "fox and skunk hunting" nudge nudge wink wink. You are a bit more diplomatic than I am. Just hope he doesn't try to jerk around the ministry as they have no patience for that. Would make for a poor introduction for the newbies

Sounds to me like he just wants to go shoot off a gun in the woods. a complete no no. randomly firing off a firearm. what if someone is portaging in the woods or even going for a crap and you shoot them blindly. not cool man!

I wouldn't go that far. I'm sure he would be responsible enough to set up a proper target site. Just looking for an excuse to bring the gun along. Don't have a problem with the target shooting. Just the shifty way he is going about it. Also not a good mentor if your first lesson on hunting ethics is how to try to bending the rules to suit your own agenda.

Until the rules has been broken he has not done anything wrong.

My question is... how good of a shot do you have with your .22? You literally need to brain shot the fox just behind the ear to kill it.

I can't believe I actually have to explain this in a manner where it makes sense to finsfurfeathers:

Imagine you have a couple of buddies who have never really fished before, but they watch lots of fishing shows and they have general knowledge of the sport but would love to try it out. You tell them, hey we're going to go out on a canoe trip and go fishing. but you can't take any fishing gear. I'll paddle you around the lake, show you were fish may be, talk about why they would be there, but you're not actually going out to catch fish or cast a line in the water. How interested do you think those newbies would be in doing it? And what kind of impression would the sport of fishing leave on them? Probably not a great one and they would never try it again. However if you did take them out, bring the gear, have them hold the rod in the water, tell them how to make the lure dance and they don't catch fish or even see a fish they're still likely to continue fishing or take it up more seriously.

This is no different. If i say, HEY we're going to go rabbit hunting but since rabbits are out of season i'm not bringing a firearm. We're going to get up super early though, and look for rabbit signs and so on.

Or i could say, Hey we're going fox hunting, we'll be using this sweet henry AR 22, we're going to get up super early, go for a nice hike deep into the woods from our campsite. Set up shop where we think we might see some foxes and we'll be super quiet, we'll get to hear the forest 'breath' around us while we wait for our shot. Knowing full well the likelihood of seeing a fox, and having a clean shot to take is less than 1%...At least i can sell it to them in a way they'll want to continue learning to hunt and maybe take the sport up fully at some point.

I travel a ton to the US for work, i would not jeopardise getting any kind of a firearm charge and losing my job over shooting off a couple rounds in the woods when I can already do that on land i have access to. Thank you for your toll though finsfurfeathers, please take that attitude to Reddit where it's more welcome.

Not being a troll just advising to set a proper example.
If you are going to be a mentor the first lesson to teach them that this sport has clear rules the governs every aspect and they can't pick and choose which ones to follow depending if its convenient or not.
There is no room for creative interpretation to achieve your own selfish outcomes
In your example about fishing you didn't mention if they purchased a license or if the season is opened. If they had not purchased a license or if the seasons are closed than no they can't even dangle a line.
I started "hunting" with dad when I was 10. Carried a stick for 4 years and made believe till I was 15 which at that time I could legally carry a gun . Did it diminish my experience because I didn't carry a gun NO!
Stop making excuses and make the proper choices
Can guarantee when deep in the bush and your newbies will start whining awe come on we just want to feel what it is like to shoot. What are you going to do? Disappoint them or not?
