Just wondering what everyone's opinion on using a .17hmr for coyotes and other varmints, I have heard that they a amazing for coyote and I have heard they are to small. Just curious and all of your opinions.

hot load for sure,was gonna buy one back in the early 80's but found it was susceptible to deflection in long grass.opted for a 22-250 instead and have been more then happy with it.also really like a 243,can use it for bigger critters as well. JMHO

Good point. Ammo is cheaper for the .243 than the .17 load. More widely available and more companies to chose from to fit your gun/shooting.

I have a couple .17 hmr's. They are a tack driver, crazy accurate and fun to shoot. I find they are easily affected by wind though. I know guys use them for yotes but IMHO I think they are a bit small. I use a .223, reasonably priced ammo, accurate if set up properly, less barrel burn than 22-250, less recoil than the .243
Lots of options out there.

I shoot Hornaday .17 for $19.00 per 50 rnds.
Can get CCI for less than that. Where do I get lead .243's

I've used the 17hmr over bait for yotes. You e gotta hit them right in the head or they run off to die. If you can move up to .223 or .243. The 17 is very accurate.

The 17 hmr is good for the 100 yards or less shot. Small hole easy on the pelts.

.223, 22-250 or 270 is my go to for yotes. Anything less and you need to nail them on the nogging at sub 100 YDS which isn't always the easiest with the hounds following

I have a 17 Hornet and it is a tack driver at 3650 fps. The 17 hmr is around 2550 fps. Check out the youtube videos on 17 Hornet coyote kills. Have fun.

Have you checked out the new rimfire .17 wsm. I've read that this is great round, but, mind you, I have not heard any first-hand reports. It might be worth checking out.

Thanks for all the replies! Guna be used around a farm as well. Still stuck on witch one (.17hmr or .243). Might go for what I find cheapest, as I am a college student on a budget.
