good start to the season

Sorry about the picture. Not a fan of the tail gate picture but forgot the camera at home today. Turned out cost me dearly as it was a stellar water fowling day. Sure the geese cooperated sort of but the vista was breath taking today. From the full moon over the decoys. To huge flights of mallards buzzing the field and most entertaining a lone snow goose pertending to be a Canada. In all my years of hunting never had cause to look up the snow goose season. Now here is a mature bird working the decoys giving me several opportunities for the shot almost begging for it. Was pretty sure they were regulated under the regular season so has to pass without even a picture to document the event.
As for the geese as is typical in the early season with no wind or weather to speak of the flight arrived pretty much all at once. The lead group came in nice and all I thought don't wiff don't wiff sure enough the first bird dropped clean but the second was a sailer. Had to leave the blind and finish it off which spook the rest of the approaching birds. Was mayhem for a bit but finished the morning with 8.

Looks like it's going to be a bluebird day where I'm going. Not expecting a good day but better than staying home.

Thats awesome! was supposed to get out for geese for my first time this year, but doesn't look like thats happening anymore. Needless to say i am a little jealous. Gongrats and enjoy!

I really dont get serious til everything is open, and there seems to be a abundent amount of swans mixed with the geese this year in our bay, was told because no babies swans, so they dont mind the geese around?

Can't wait for the winter. Right now enjoying goose liver pate, later for lunch going to have breaded goose fingers, for dinner probably a goose breast stir fry.
At some point will get to a pot roast of legs however first got to get to a heart and gizzard stew.

Funny I goose hunt when nothing else is open.

My buddy went hunting and had a good hunt. Asked me if I would like 2 geese which I accepted with great gratitude. Couple youtube videos and I was able to breast and leg them and now waiting for the final 2 hours of the crockpot to be done. House smells amazing. I took out the hearts and livers and fried them in grapeseed oil salt and pepper. Amazing. Is the gizzard that kind of oval stomach looking thing? Wish i knew you could eat those. Would have kept them for sure. How do you prepare yours? If lucky enough to get more geese I don't want to waste anything I can eat. Dont hunt so this is a real treat for me. May get into hunting after all!

the stomach is edible teat it as any heavy muscle fiber cut. Hard to prepare harder to describe. basically fillet the meat lobe off the inner lining of the stomach.

As I thought clear, calm slow day. Not much moving. Managed 2 skycarp. My buddy left with one before I could get a pic. 2 birds not much to brag about anyway. Still early for the area we were hunting, only a couple large flocks, mostly still in family groups. Nice to get out though, been working way too much lately.

Ya geese seem to have shifted areas of use right now. Only one of my spots is showing any activity. Others not so much. Lots of geese in inaccessible areas right now. Unfortunately my sunday hunt areas are a no go right now as most of my spots are in corn this year. Big bunch of geese on the 48 just north of Sutton but can't get at them.
But all in all always better to be out than at work
