My son and I went out on the last day of turkey season first thing in the morning. For a fourteen year old he’s good at getting up early ,especially if it involves turkey hunting.
We heard a bird gobbling across the road from our house so we went to set up on him ,but I think the bird saw me because when he flew down he ignored all calls and went the other way.
As we were walking towards a distant bush we heard one across the road so we hiked over. In the fifteen minutes it took us to get to the bush we heard the bird gobbling from ,he had gone silent.
We set up and started calling but the bird wouldn’t gobble until I started cutting on a slate call. That fired him up. We moved a little closer as now we knew where he was. Finally he headed our way and went silent. Ten minutes later we saw two red heads bobbing through the bush, cautiously checking out our area.
Slowly they got closer until one was standing at 24 yards. One shot and it was all over but the frying.
