shot gun slug barrel

couple questions, I have a smooth bore slug barrel, can you use bird shot in it? rifled slug barrel can you use slugs for the smooth bore barrel in it? also going to try new Reminton 1100 rifled slug gun with scope this season, see how that compares to my old winchester smooth barrel slug gun, thank in advance, cheers

for a smooth bore slug gun, don't see why you can't use bird shot, depending on the size of the choke, steel shot could be a problem.

For rifled barrel, not sure of using smooth bore slugs in a rifled barrel. maybe, probably not as accurate.

I would take these questions to your local gun shop and ask them.

If you haven't matched the gun with a bullet yet, a few in our gang have switched to the "Remington AccuTip Bonded Sabot Slug" and really like their performance. Cabela's has them on "sale" (?) right now; they also give the ballistics on each round. 2 3/4" has performed well -- the extra 50 f/s for the 3" on deer..... ??? The 385 grain bullet at 1850 f/p groups well and will punch! (I'm not connected to any company/sponsor, ....other than the wife that lets me out to play, occasionally!)

X2 on the accutip, I was using hornby, but local shop ran out so I bought the remington. Much better grouping for me too. Now I haven't shot anything other then paper with them, but do leave a big hole in the plywood at 100yd

You can absolutely use bird shot in a smooth bore slug barrel. I have for years for rabbits in tight bush. It is just a fixed improved cylinder choked short barrel.
If you are using that gun for deer. I would suggest using Canadian made Challenger rifled slugs. I have used them for 15 years in the controlled hunt and can tell you that the accuracy is excellent and they hit like a ton of bricks!

X2 on the Challengers. I was shooting an open sight smooth bore slug barrel - and had excellent groupings at 50 yds. I hunt in the bush, so and rarely take shots longer, but the guy at the store told me they are accurate up to 100 yds.

I bought a rifled slug barrel for my 870 a couple years ago, and have been using the Hornady slugs. I have no complaints at all with the rifled barrel either. According to the ballistics chart they drop 6" at 200 yds. Again, in the bush, I can't see past 75 yds (at the most) so I've never worried about shooting that distance. LOL It's just like shooting a rifle, but with the weight of a shotgun.

I was told that you can't/shouldn't fire smooth bore slugs through a rifled barrel. It will leave a mess in the rifling apparently.

thanks guys for the info Brooktrout I am with you, right done and dirty bush lucky to get out to 30 yards with the Challengers for years, yes they have a BIG punch and even the BIG deer drop fast, will try the Accutip also, cheers and good luck gentlemen

for a smooth bore I couldn't agree more the challengers are the way to go. I was using my duck gun with the challengers. At 50 yds I had 3 slugs touching each other, looked like mickey mouse. At 75yds dropped about 4" and still great grouping.

yes, I like my duck gun, use it all the time, used to it, compared to high powered 300 Winmag which I seldom shoot just to target in, seems to work for me over the years old Winchester pump, my Beretta auto a wee to heavy in the bush, see how the Remington does, might be better, personal preference I guess
