We for the 4th straight year I was unsuccessful in getting drawn. Hard to believe with the success rate of 60% that you can not be drawn in 4 straight years. Guess I can cancel my week of vacation now.

Do you apply individually or as a group?
Individually you have a much lower chance of getting drawn than the official success rate.

For example if there are 600 tags available and 1000 people apply (to keep the math easy for the 60% rate). They could draw as little as 150 people (thus making the effective individual success rate only 15%) to give out all 600 tags. This is because if a member of a group gets drawn then every member of that group automatically gets a tag as well.

I've seen it go the other way too. I hunt in a group of 12 and one year eight guys didn't get tags because they applied as two groups(I think back then it was four to a group application.). The other four that applied individually all got tags. I have a friend who does the December controlled hunt and his area is 80 percent success rate. In 5 years he has struck out twice, drawn an altered or antlerless once and two buck only tags. Luck of the draw. That's the way it goes. Hope you get one next year.

Hester then my buddy faired. He applied as a group and his group got a tag. Sadly he is not listed in the group as the MNR lost his application on line. Even with his confirmation of application the MNR can do nothing as the draw is done.

now that is sad. MNR should come good on that, it would only be one extra tag and it was their screwup.

It really doesn't matter anyway, I just like to use shotgun to hunt once and awhile. Last year my oldest had a controlled tag and filled it the first week of bow season. I ended up getting 2 bucks and not filling one tag.

My question on that is there a possibility of group members receiving different tags? If 4 people apply and are successful would they all get the same tag or could one of the group member get a doe tag and the rest buck? Has anyone ever come across this or has it always just been the same tag?

In the controlled hunt draw you always get doe tags (which is also good for bucks) (with the exception of WMU 76 A/B/C/D/E and 77 B/C).
For these exception WMUs i dont see why everybody in the group would get the same tag type.

Thank you. I have only done controlled hunt in 2 of those exception wmu's and never drawn anterless. In one case I am hunting with property owner so he and his family have property owner tags which is great but in the other wmu we have put in as a group a few times and never drawn any anterless didn't know if it was worthwhile putting in separately and risking not everybody getting drawn for the sake of a possible anterless tag. Historically less than half the allotted tags are applied for so I am not too scared of being unsuccessful but anything can happen.

If the MNR screwed up and a applicant was not in the draw, a tag is often given. More calls to MNR is needed and a trip to nric in Peterborough maybe. Lots of moose tags haven been given out due to errors back in the paper tag days.

I was successful in 76B for any deer.
If anyone has a spot there and wants to party hunt PM me.

If a person isn't drawn for a controlled hunt, they can't be in the bush deer hunting. So you would need to find someone who has a tag as well.

It's the first time I'm doing the controlled hunt. I have a spot I'm going to try. I didn't know you couldn't party hunt
