Hello fellow hunters, don't belong to your group and not familiar with hunting regs. Just wondering if these pictures look like legal trophy to you or more like a poacher's mess. If this was not a legal kill, is there anything i should/could do about? PS. Im not Karen and being avid fishermen all life long i love fare sport practices, just hate poachering.

if in doubt drop a call to the MNR or tips with the details. Hard to tell for sure as can't confirm if they are hens or jakes.
On a side note not a fan of just breasting out the birds however its not an indication of illiegal or legal kill.

Probably not a poaching situation IMO.

The bird on the bottom is a Jake as it has spurs so it can’t be a hen. The bird top pic I don’t see any legs on. My guess is they both are Jakes that were in a group of Jakes which is common this time of year. It is legal to shoot Jakes and legal to clean them in the bush. Only things I wouldn’t do myself are leave the Carcass in the open like that and I would harvest the legs.

The only thing I see here that could be considered a violation, is the hunter that didn’t take the legs could be cited for wasting game Meet. It’s a stretch though as I am sure it would be 50/50 depending on which CO you got.

Thank you guys for explaining it to me, my concern was if these were 2 females. Also wierd to see it was dumped like this, but, gald to hear it is likely not an illegal harvest. Good luck hunters.

besides leaving the legs, it is not a good idea to leave the carcasses out where they can be found, just gives hunters a bad name.

I agree with the very poor decision of leaving a carcass in obvious view.

About leaving the legs unharvested, this question was asked of a guest C.O. at a turkey course ("years ago now!"). His answer was: "Have you ever eaten the legs? No C.O. worth his weight would charge a hunter for not harvesting legs."

I have only ever seen one hunter take the legs (not myself). He popped the wings, cut in the back along the spine, freed a breast and the upper leg as one "roast". He repeated the same for the other side's meat. Kind of slick.

Guess he never learned to cook.
At a minimum toss the drum sticks in the soup pot and for a real treat smoke 'em first than make a pot of potatoe/leek soup.

Legs are great slow cooked and made into a stroganoff. Our gang likes it as good as the breasts. Pressure cooking tenderizes them too. They also make a great soup. I hope he is a better C,O. than a cook.

My concern with this photo is why the head and legs are removed from one bird and not the other. Is it because it was a hen? Why are there 2 dead birds, was there 2 hunters? Agree with the others these carcasses should have been thrown in a bush out of site, as we all know the clean up crew would sniff them out and not require them to be in sight. When ever your in doubt and if it appears to be sketchy call it in. Sometimes photos do not tell a complete story.

Good on you Sidehook for asking the question.

I've seen many people just breast and leg them vs plucking the whole bird. It's how I was taught and is what I do.

I once struggled with legs and wondered why people ate them. However, I agree with some others, I just didn't know how to cook them. Now I let them simmer in chicken stock and other herbs for a couple of hours. Once the meat is completely tender, it falls off the bones, and then I put it in a pan with some oil/lard to slightly crisp the meat edges and make carnitas. Delicious!

Now I need to go get a turkey!

I personally never pluck wild Turkey. I skin them then I breast them out and take the legs and thighs.

Normally I pressure cook or slow cook the legs but I have been looking for something better to do. This year I tried something I like much better.
I took the legs and cut all the meat away and separated all tendons from the meat. Then I ground it all with some pork fat. Seasoned the ground meat then formed burger Pattie’s. I then floured, egg washed and Panko breaded. I fried them to make crisp Turkey burgers. They were some of the best burgers I have ever made or eaten.
