We just got home from our northern moose trip in the early rifle season area. We left on Sept. 17 and arrived in camp on the afternoon of the 18th. We quickly setup camp and as there is just two of us it didn’t take long. We use a slide in truck camper so setup is a breeze.
We started hunting that afternoon as the season opened on the 17th. The clear cuts were still loaded with blueberries and lots of bear sign so anticipation was high. The first couple days were warm but then we got some cooler weather. We saw a bull cruising the shoreline while we were fishing but we couldn’t close the distance quickly enough and he slippped into the bush .
On Wednesday I was poking through a clear cut with good moose sign when I came over a sharp knoll there was a bear about 40 yards away . One shot through the lungs and a 20 yard dash later he was piled up. I loaded him on the wheeler and got him back to camp.
The days were filled with walleye fishing, blueberry picking and moose hunting. As the days were ticking by we were finding moosey areas but not seeing the track makers. A couple moose were shot in the surrounding areas. On Sat. evening we split up for the evening hunt as we both usually hunt alone in separate areas to cover more ground . Shortly after 5:00 I hear two shots from my partners area and ten minutes later two more. He was in a canoe so I assumed the last two were finishers and I headed in the trail with equipment to assist in the extraction.
Sure enough he had knocked down a good sized bull and he was pumped. We started butchering at 7:00 and we had the moose back in camp by 11:00 at night as we didn’t want to leave him overnight as there were wolves howling most nights especially in that area.
We had to load two quarters ata time in the canoe ,paddle back to where we could get the wheeler down to the lake, four wheel out a rough trail for a kilometre and then back to camp. Then we went back for the second trip. It was raining off and on but poured on the last paddle down the lake. What some people do for fun but we had a smile on our faces the whole time.
We hung out at camp the next day, celebrated that evening and packed up Monday for the 24 hour trip home.
Here’s a few pics.
