I was out on Saturday on a Simcoe county property that will remain unnamed. I was there looking for Grey Squirrel, but due to the light rain all morning they seemed to be tucked away in their nests and never got an opportunity all morning.
After about three hours I decided to head back to my car, warm up and dry off a bit. I was only about 150 meters from the parking lot, walking briskly at this point not expecting to see much as I was out of the hardwoods. As I was walking along, something caught my eye. I looked left and sitting under an apple tree not 25 feet away was what would become my first grouse.
I honestly took an extra second to confirm what I was seeing, as my only experience with grouse in the past was hearing them flush and vanish before shouldering my 12ga. Needless to say I was pretty shocked, as I've read it is very uncommon to see grouse on this particular property. Funny enough I flushed another, about 20 yards from where I bagged the first. That turned out to be my only opportunities for the day, but I couldn't really complain all things considered.
