Well wasn't holding out a lot of hope as winds were high. On my camera I had 4 straight days of deer in the mornings. So was going to go out on the 5th day but wind was wrong. Good thing didn't go as no deer, than yesterday rained all day and again no deer. Figured I better go today even with wind up, actually wasn't to bad first thing, tomorrow was going to be perfect wind and just before the controlled hunt. Started off this morning getting turned around in the dark trying to find the my spot. About 850 deer walks down trail from corn field, it gets to my shooting lane at about 18yds quartering away. It was walking and failed to take that into account. Bolt went through and had lots of blood. Deer took off straight away saw it for about 40yds than lost it in bush. I know it was to far back so was expecting a long track and a long wait to begin with. When I got up to check to bolt on other side of trail looked out into the field and there were 3 more about 50yds out watching. I walked back to quad and drove back to jeep, loaded quad and drove back to bush through the field. walked with Sam to point where I shot the deer. I figured I'd or I should say sam would track it for a short ways just to get a feel for how far it was going to go. Sam got on it right away and started tracking it. She found it just over 40yds out. Like I thought it was hit way back but since it was quartering away the bolt got liver and lung.

Great job, congrats! I’ll take that quartering away shot all day, as long as you envision the bolt exit area. Good on Sam for making the track job easy for you. Again, congrats.

thanks guys, it was a small Doe, I was lucky that it only went as far as it did, I also like quartering away shots, but that was just luck on my part, I will have to work on this spot for next year, my ideas this year, first time there was all wrong and too limiting on the shot. Sam is a great dog and has tracked 7 deer so far. I tell all people I meet to call me if they need help, but no one has and they have lost deer. I don't know if she is prefect as she has found all 7 deer I have used her for, but a lot better than not trying. I have know 4 people that have lost deer and could have called me.
Oh well now time for her to start on squirrel hunting. Farmer was pretty much begging me to shoot them around his buildings. So hopefully I can post some pictures of Sam and some squirrels.
