My son and I left for moose hunting on Sept. 20 and returned on Oct 3. We had warm weather throughout the trip and there was very little calling or activity. We hunted every morning and evening and occasionally we would here a single cow bawl in the distance. My brother in law came later and while stting lakeside he had a cow and bull get together calling all the way. Despite hus best efforts he could not swing them his way. We hunted hard, bird hunted( ruffed, spruce, and sharptail grouse)and fished for pickerel and pike. The fishing was great as was the bird hunting. My son and I saw four caribou, mostly small caribou bulls and always swimming across the lake. Im always fascinated by them.
My brother in law saw a bear on the road on the way back to camp one day and we watched northern lights for three nights in a row.
On Sept 26 my son and I were fishing and he spotted a cow on the far lakeshore. We paddled towards it and got to within three hundred yards but there was no place to get a shooting rest. She faded into the bush so we set up and tried to call her in and waited until dark but she never reappeared. Exciting times!
We never got shooting this year but I got to spend two weeks fishing ,camping, hunting with my son who recently moved out of our house. He is the best company on a trip and I cant wait until next year!
